Chinese automakers reach record 12% market share in Europe

Chinese automotive brands have reached a record market share of nearly 12 percent in Europe as of August 2026. This growth is driven by a significant shift toward electrified vehicles, with battery electric vehicle sales in the EU rising by 62.7 percent in August.

Data indicates that Chinese manufacturers are increasingly utilizing plug-in hybrids to navigate European trade policies. This shift follows the imposition of countervailing duties specifically targeting pure battery electric vehicles. Consequently, sales of Chinese-made plug-in hybrids and full hybrids have seen substantial increases compared to previous years.

In response to this trend, the European Commission has requested that China voluntarily limit hybrid vehicle exports to a market quota of approximately 15 percent. While Chinese brands like BYD have seen massive sales growth, other manufacturers have reported mixed results; for instance, Dacia saw a 12.9 percent decline in European sales during August.
