Global EV Sales Surge as Europe Expands Charging Network
Electric vehicle (EV) sales have grown tenfold over the past six years, reaching about 21 million units worldwide in 2025 and accounting for roughly 25 % of new car registrations. China leads the market, with EVs making up 63 % of new cars by May 2026 and pricing becoming lower than diesel and gasoline models. Europe records strong adoption, especially in northern countries—Norway nearly 100 % EV sales, Denmark 82 %, Sweden 65 %—while the EU average is about one EV per 11 public chargers.
Infrastructure is expanding rapidly. The European Union surpassed one million publicly accessible charging points in 2024, a 35 % increase year‑on‑year, and continued growing by about 20 % in 2025. Over 70 % of these chargers are concentrated in the Netherlands, Germany and France, which together host more than 600 000 stations. The UK added over 30 % of its chargers to reach roughly 116 000. Rapid‑charge sites are also increasing, supported by EU regulations requiring high‑power stations every 60 km on major roads. By contrast, the United States saw EV market share stall around 10 % and fall below 6 % in early 2026 after tax incentives were withdrawn.
