Global experts offer cooling strategies as heatwaves intensify
People working outdoors in hot climates across several countries share practical ways to stay safe. Luis Pacherrez Antón, president of Agroperu Cooperative in Peru’s Piura region, says “the sun rays start to shine very early – from 9 am… we stay comfortable by starting much earlier and consuming the healthy foods that we produce, like bananas, oranges, lemons, grapes, papayas and avocados.” In Aqaba, Jordan, diving instructor Obada Almaitah adds, “I schedule physically demanding tasks during the early morning whenever possible.” Tour guide Despina Savvidou, who has led visitors at the Acropolis in Athens for 48 years, notes that temperatures that were once considered extreme are now normal, advising “to book the earliest tour – before the Acropolis even opens.”
Further tips focus on hydration. Egyptian archaeologist Dr Zahi Hawass stresses, “I make sure to drink water regularly while working outdoors.” Pulmonary doctor Sherene M El‑Sioufi in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, recommends the local yoghurt‑based drink laban for electrolytes, saying, “the key is to drink consistently.” Together these suggestions—adjusting schedules, eating fresh produce, and staying continually hydrated—aim to help people cope with heatwaves that regularly exceed 40 °C.
