Global finance faces shifts as BRICS diversifies and US dollar dominance is debated

The global financial landscape is facing shifts regarding the dominance of the US dollar. While discussions of de-dollarization persist, the dollar remains a primary pillar of international finance. As of the second quarter of 2026, the dollar accounted for 56.7% of global foreign-exchange reserves, and in April 2025, it represented 89.2% of all currency trades.

Rather than a sudden collapse, the BRICS bloc—now consisting of eleven members—is pursuing a strategy of gradual diversification. The group aims to establish alternative mechanisms for payment, borrowing, and settlement to reduce reliance on any single currency or financial pipeline.

Concurrently, analysts suggest the United States may face a structural choice between maintaining the strength of the dollar and stabilizing the Treasury market. Concerns have been raised regarding the US net international investment position and the fact that true interest expenses, including social programs, have reached levels exceeding federal receipts. Some experts argue that policymakers have historically prioritized saving bonds over the dollar, potentially leading to a system where bonds are saved nominally but lose value in real terms.
