Global fiscal shifts: Australia forecasts debt savings as US debt exceeds $40 trillion
Australia’s upcoming intergenerational report is expected to reveal that gross government debt will be significantly lower than previous forecasts. Treasurer Jim Chalmers is set to report that debt will sit at approximately a quarter of GDP, a reduction worth more than $500 billion in nominal terms by 2062. This improvement is attributed to recent budget spending cuts, even as the nation faces rising interest costs on government debt.
Simultaneously, the United States is facing fiscal pressures as its national debt surpassed $40 trillion in August 2026. This milestone has triggered a rotation of investor capital into assets viewed as hedges against currency debasement. Bitcoin and gold have seen rising prices and increased correlation as the US dollar weakens. While gold shows overwhelming bullish sentiment in options markets, Bitcoin remains more volatile, though research suggests that blended allocations of both assets may offer superior risk-adjusted returns compared to traditional portfolios.
