Global food prices rise as climate and logistics impact cereal and rice yields
Global food prices have reached 136 points, driven by rising costs for cereals and sugar. This increase is attributed to a combination of climate-related yield reductions in key exporting regions and logistical disruptions that have increased trade costs. Specifically, the cereal index rose by 17.2% compared to September 2025, with wheat and corn seeing significant gains due to Black Sea logistical obstacles and dry weather in North America.
In Italy, the rice sector in the Ferrara region is facing a severe crisis. Local producers report a significant drop in yields caused by extreme weather, including heatwaves and hail, which have destroyed between 20% and 80% of crops in certain areas. Estimates suggest a total production deficit of 40% to 50% for some varieties. Despite this scarcity, farmers are reporting unjustified price contractions due to existing stocks from previous seasons, creating economic tension for local growers.
