Global food system shows resilience against super El Nino
The global food system is demonstrating increased resilience against a projected “super” El Nino event due to near-record inventories, technological advancements, and the emergence of major exporters like Brazil and Russia. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), global farm production has outpaced population growth and consumption since the 1980s, driven by higher-yielding crop varieties, improved irrigation, and better fertilizer use.
Despite this preparedness, the El Nino phenomenon is expected to intensify in late 2024 and early 2025, potentially being one of the strongest on record. Dryness has already disrupted planting in parts of Asia, including India, Southeast Asia, and Australia. In India, a deficient monsoon season is a concern, while Australia faces dry weather in key wheat-growing regions. Additionally, shortages of fertilizer and diesel linked to the conflict in Iran pose further risks to global production.
In Brazil, agricultural experts note that the sector is entering a period of heightened risk where climate, geopolitics, and digital technologies are increasingly interconnected, requiring proactive risk management rather than just crisis response.
