Food Systems Countdown Initiative report shows global failure to meet 2030 targets

A new study by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative (FSCI), published in Nature Food, reveals that most countries are failing to meet international targets for transforming food systems by 2030. The analysis, which examined 197 countries across 44 indicators, shows that progress is insufficient in key areas including nutrition, health, environment, and governance.

Of 30 defined global targets, only mobile phone subscriptions has been achieved by the majority of nations. For 22 indicators, fewer than one-third of countries are on track to meet their 2030 goals. Most notably, no country is currently projected to meet the target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from food systems.

The report highlights regressive trends in several sectors, such as increased sales of ultra-processed foods, rising pesticide use, and inefficient agricultural water use. Experts warn that without significant acceleration, many of the sustainable development commitments made by governments will remain unfulfilled.
