Global fraud losses hit $442 billion amid AI-driven attacks
The Bureau’s Global Fraud Intelligence Report 2026 indicates that global fraud losses reached an estimated $442 billion in 2025. The report highlights how artificial intelligence is lowering the cost and complexity of sophisticated attacks, enabling fraudsters to automate and scale operations through generative AI, deepfakes, and voice cloning.
Key findings show that synthetic-linked account takeover events tripled in a single quarter, with account takeover risk surging nearly 70% between April and June 2026. The rise of real-time payment systems, such as UPI, FedNow, and Faster Payments, is further complicating defense by shrinking the window between fraud detection and irreversible settlement. The report warns that the next major challenge involves distinguishing legitimate machine-led transactions from malicious autonomous AI agents.
