Global fuel price volatility triggers protests and economic concerns
Global fuel prices and energy costs are driving widespread social unrest and economic uncertainty. In Syria, significant price hikes for diesel and gasoline—attributed to global trends and refinery maintenance—have triggered protests, including road blockades between Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor.
In Portugal, local business leaders and workers have protested in Espinho against rising living costs and fuel prices. Meanwhile, in the United States, domestic fuel prices have risen, with warnings of potential 30% increases in heating oil costs this winter due to geopolitical tensions and maritime security concerns in the Gulf and Bab al-Mandab.
In Egypt, officials indicate that fuel prices will remain unchanged through the end of September due to existing petroleum contracts. A pricing committee is scheduled to meet in the first week of October to evaluate whether adjustments are necessary based on global crude oil trends and economic conditions. Experts note that every one-dollar increase in Brent crude oil adds approximately 4 billion Egyptian pounds to the state budget.
