Global Fund warns of critical risks to HIV, TB, and malaria efforts
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has warned that progress against these diseases is at a critical juncture due to significant reductions in international support. Data indicates that in 2025, donor government funding for HIV decreased by $2.1 billion compared to 2024, representing a 25 per cent cut.
Despite these funding challenges, the Global Fund reported that 26.9 million people in supported countries had access to antiretroviral therapy last year. Additionally, AIDS-related deaths in 2025 were 57 per cent lower than in 2010, dropping from 1.3 million to 570,000.
Funding shortages are disproportionately affecting HIV prevention efforts, particularly for women. In sub-Saharan Africa, women account for 60 per cent of new HIV acquisitions. Adolescent girls and young women aged 15 to 24 remain at high risk, with 3,000 new acquisitions reported per week in 2025.
