Global Gold Demand Holds at 1,269 tonnes in Q2 2026
A World Gold Council report shows total gold demand remained steady at 1,269 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026, matching the same period a year earlier, even as prices fell from early‑year highs. Investment in gold‑backed ETFs and bullion fell, with net outflows of 45 tonnes, while demand for bars and coins slipped only 3% year‑on‑year. Over‑the‑counter demand rose to 571 tonnes, driven by Asian investors, and central banks added a net 289 tonnes to reserves, a 62% annual increase.
Meanwhile, the Taziazat mine in Mauritania, operated by Kinross Gold, increased production in the first half of 2026 to 263,325 ounces, a 2% rise from the previous year and close to half of its 505,000‑ounce annual target. The modest output gain follows a 5% drop in Q1 and reflects higher ore throughput and improved processing. The mine remains a key contributor to Mauritania’s mining sector, which accounts for roughly 27% of the country’s extractive industry output.
