Global public debt projected to exceed 100% of GDP by 2030

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a warning regarding rising global debt, projecting that global public debt could exceed 100% of global GDP by 2030. This level of indebtedness is comparable to the period immediately following World War II.

Fitch Ratings reports that rising government bond yields are placing significant pressure on public budgets in developed economies. The agency expects total public debt in these nations to reach $75.4 trillion by the end of 2026, representing approximately 102% of their combined GDP. Among the ten largest developed economies, 10-year bond yields have risen by an average of 81 basis points this year, with France experiencing the most significant increase at 135 basis points.

Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, identified spiraling government debt as a primary threat to global wealth. He noted that because government bond rates serve as the benchmark for mortgages, corporate loans, and pensions, volatility in the bond market can ripple through all asset classes. The IMF cautioned that a bond market shock could negatively impact asset values, including AI-related stocks and government bonds used as collateral.
