Global health studies examine obesity mechanisms and dietary trends

Recent studies and data highlight various facets of the global obesity crisis and metabolic health. In Slovenia, regional disparities in overweight populations are evident; while Maribor and Ljubljana report lower rates (49.38%), Jesenice and Velenje see significantly higher levels, reaching up to 66.76%. Notably, obesity among 15-year-olds in the country has risen from 13% in 2002 to 25% in 2022.

Biological research from the University of California, Irvine, has identified a link between fructose metabolism in the small intestine and fat absorption. Using mouse models, researchers found that inhibiting fructose breakdown in the small intestine can mitigate fructose-induced obesity and insulin resistance by affecting the intestinal microbiome and the function of lacteals, which transport dietary fats.

Social factors also play a role in weight management. A study from Anglia Ruskin University suggests that men often struggle with weight loss due to perceptions that dieting is a “feminine domain.” Many men expressed aversion to restrictive diets, viewing the term “diet” negatively, and noted that weight loss discourse often focuses on female aesthetics.
