Global health trends highlight mental health and obesity risks in youth
Recent epidemiological data and health warnings highlight growing concerns regarding the mental and physical health of children and adolescents. An analysis based on 192 studies and over 700,000 people indicates that 62.5% of individuals who develop a mental disorder experience its onset before the age of 25, with 48.4% starting before age 18.
Researchers published in Molecular Psychiatry suggest that the rigid division of healthcare services at age 18 may hinder continuity of care, as many conditions emerging in adolescence require long-term management into adulthood.
Concurrently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported a significant rise in childhood obesity, noting that prevalence among children and adolescents aged 5 to 19 has increased from 4% to 18% over the last five decades. The WHO emphasized the need to address the mental health impacts of this trend, specifically the stigma, discrimination, and bullying related to body image, which can lead to profound emotional distress and social withdrawal.
