Global health trends link nutrition to diabetes prevention and mental well-being

Global health trends highlight a rising prevalence of diabetes and the significant impact of nutrition on mental well-being. According to the International Diabetes Federation, 589 million adults worldwide live with diabetes. In Turkey, approximately 9.6 million adults are affected, with estimates suggesting the number could reach 12 million. Experts warn that many cases go undetected due to the insidious nature of the disease, noting that one in two diabetic patients in Turkey may be unaware of their condition.

Medical professionals emphasize that Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable through lifestyle changes. Reducing body weight by 5-10% can decrease the risk of developing the disease by up to 58%. Key preventative measures include managing abdominal fat, reducing refined sugar intake, increasing physical activity, and ensuring adequate sleep.

Parallel research explores the link between diet and mental health. Studies, such as the SMILES trial involving Deakin University, suggest that a Mediterranean-style diet—rich in whole grains, vegetables, fruits, fish, and olive oil—can help reduce symptoms of depression. Experts suggest that maintaining stable blood sugar levels through regular eating patterns is essential for supporting brain function and preventing mood fluctuations associated with anxiety and fatigue.
