Global inflation trends show mixed signals in US and South Korea

Economic forecasts indicate a potential easing of inflationary pressures in the United States. Economists project the July core Consumer Price Index (CPI) to rise by 2.5% year-on-year, which would be the lowest annual increase since February. This trend is expected to be driven by stabilizing energy prices, including lower retail gasoline and aviation fuel costs.

In South Korea, the Bank of Korea faces a complex situation. While the headline July consumer price inflation slowed to 2.8%, core inflation—which excludes volatile items like food and energy—rose to 2.6%. This increase in core inflation, the highest in over two years, has prompted Bank of Korea Governor Shin Hyun-song to emphasize the importance of monitoring long-term price trends. The central bank is weighing potential interest rate hikes to address demand-side pressures, such as rising wages and domestic consumption, despite concerns regarding global economic uncertainty.
