Global initiatives target water security and sanitation access
Global efforts to improve water security and sanitation are gaining momentum through major institutional initiatives. The African Union has designated 2026 as the Year of “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” This move elevates water management to a strategic political priority to combat challenges such as climate change, population growth, and infrastructure deficits that threaten food security and public health across the continent.
In support of these global goals, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has launched the Abu Dhabi Global Water Platform. This initiative aims to mobilize USD 2 billion between 2026 and 2030, with USD 1 billion committed by the ADFD itself. The platform is designed to foster international cooperation and innovative financing to provide safe water services to approximately 10 million people worldwide, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.
