Global interest in Mandarin Chinese rises among leaders and learners
There is a significant global surge in Mandarin Chinese learners, driven by economic opportunities and cultural curiosity. Data from Duolingo indicates that Chinese was the second-fastest-growing language on the platform in the United States, with new learners increasing by 216 percent year-over-year. This trend extends to various regions, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany, Indonesia, and Mexico.
High-profile figures and political leaders have noted the language's importance. Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić have highlighted their engagement with the language. Additionally, reports suggest that prominent American business figures, including Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg, have incorporated Chinese into their children's education.
Experts suggest that proficiency in Mandarin provides direct access to China's massive economy and allows learners to bypass filtered narratives by accessing local reporting. As China's economic influence grows, the language has become integrated into the national education systems of over 90 countries, with the total number of global learners surpassing 200 million.
