Global labor unrest rises with major strikes in Germany and South Korea

Labor unrest and strikes have seen a significant increase in Germany and internationally. In Germany, participation in labor struggles reached record levels in August, with at least 935,000 activists involved so far this year. This includes a major strike by approximately 175,000 automotive workers on September 21. Additionally, the German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB) organized protests in 15 cities on September 26 against federal austerity measures, drawing between 175,000 and 200,000 participants.

Global labor movements are also active. In South Korea, 40,000 Hyundai workers conducted the first nationwide strike in a decade to demand wage increases and job security. In the Philippines, DHL employees struck for higher wages, following similar actions by DHL Express workers in Germany earlier this year. In India, apprentices at a Mahindra & Mahindra tractor plant protested for permanent employment and better pay, leading to production interruptions. Meanwhile, student-led protests have emerged in Indonesia and India regarding corruption and employment opportunities.
