Global leaders call for unity amid geopolitical instability

In separate high-level addresses, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued calls for unity and peace amidst escalating global tensions.

During her sixth State of the Union speech, von der Leyen emphasized the resilience of the European Union while warning of internal and external threats. She highlighted priorities including energy, artificial intelligence, critical raw materials, and industrial simplification. Addressing the 81st UN General Assembly, Antonio Guterres called for immediate de-escalation in the Middle East to prevent further conflict and ensure the survival of a two-state solution. He also addressed the war in Ukraine, condemning Russia’s invasion as a violation of the UN Charter and noting the global risks posed by attacks on energy and water infrastructure. Guterres urged world leaders to prioritize humanitarian aid and international law.
