Global leaders convene to address gender-based violence and small island state priorities

The 7th Annual Bel isi PNG Leadership Forum was held on September 21, 2026, focusing on the theme “Beyond the Ink: Moving GBV and FSV Policies from Commitment to Action.” Leaders from government, business, and civil society gathered to discuss practical methods for preventing and responding to gender-based violence (GBV) and family and sexual violence (FSV) in Papua New Guinea. Doreen Iga, Chair of Bel isi PNG, emphasized that leaders must move beyond statements of support to invest in people, strengthen systems, and ensure accountability.

In New York, the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) held its 2026 Leaders’ Meeting to address the challenges facing Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Chaired by Palau President Surangel S. Whipps Jr., the meeting focused on strengthening collective positions regarding climate change, ocean governance, sustainable development, and international financing.

Seychelles President Patrick Herminie highlighted the gap between international commitments and practical implementation, specifically noting progress on the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index and the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS. Discussions also covered preparations for COP31 and the implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement.
