Global luxury spending patterns and wealth management

High-end automotive purchases represent the largest sector of global luxury spending, with an estimated €579 billion spent in 2024. This significantly exceeds spending on private jets and yachts, which totaled €31 billion, as well as fine wines and spirits at €99 billion.

Other major luxury categories include personal items such as clothing, jewelry, and leather goods, generating €363 billion in 2024. The beauty sector, encompassing cosmetics and perfumes, also remains a significant market. In the luxury watch industry, which saw annual revenues of $57.2 billion, Switzerland remains the dominant market leader.

Geographically, the United States leads in luxury consumption, driven by its high concentration of wealthy individuals. Of the world's approximately 57.5 million millionaires, 41% reside in the U.S. The country also hosts the highest number of billionaires, accounting for 989 of the world's 3,428, including 15 of the top 20 individuals.

Financial experts distinguish between conspicuous consumption—the visible display of wealth through purchases—and the long-term structuring of wealth. While visible assets like luxury cars or homes may signal status, they do not necessarily reflect an individual's actual net worth or financial stability, as they may be accompanied by significant debt or high monthly commitments.
