Global maritime infrastructure projects advance in Singapore and New Zealand

Major maritime infrastructure projects are underway in Singapore and New Zealand to modernize shipping capabilities and enhance logistics efficiency.

In Singapore, the Tuas port project is being developed in four phases on reclaimed land. Designed as the world’s largest fully automated container port, the facility aims to consolidate operations from older city and Pasir Panjang terminals. This consolidation is intended to reduce costs and improve vessel turnaround times. Operations began in September 2022 with the opening of the first three berths, and the port is designed to accommodate ultra-large container ships.

In New Zealand, the Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) is advancing the $821 million Te Awaparahi Bay Expansion and Resilience Project. Expected to be completed by 2031, the development will include a 388-metre deepwater wharf, a five-hectare container terminal, and new ship-to-shore and semi-automated yard cranes. The project includes infrastructure upgrades such as high-voltage electrical networks, on-site data centres, and the extension of a private 5G network to support new equipment.
