Global markets face pressure from rising bond yields and audit penalties
Global financial markets are facing pressure from rising bond yields and shifting economic indicators. In the United States, concerns regarding the “natural interest rate” (R-star) are growing. Analysts suggest that massive capital demands from AI infrastructure investments and increasing government debt may structurally raise neutral interest rates, making it difficult for the Federal Reserve to return to previous low-rate environments.
In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng Index faced downward pressure, dropping toward the 25,000 level as global bond yields climbed. This volatility is linked to rising inflation risks and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Additionally, Swire Pacific announced an accelerated exchange of its Cathay Pacific holdings to manage its balance sheet, a move analysts describe as a long-term strategic adjustment rather than a lack of confidence in Cathay.
Separately, the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants has fined Swand International and two directors a total of 910,000 HKD. The disciplinary action stems from serious audit failures during the 2014 audit of Swand International, where auditors failed to properly verify bank balances despite being aware of potential fraud risks involving approximately 2 billion RMB in cash discrepancies.
