Global markets face volatility as chip stocks and gold prices fluctuate
Global markets are experiencing volatility driven by rising bond yields, inflation concerns, and geopolitical uncertainty. Gold spot prices saw a slight decline of 0.1% to $4,516.19 per ounce, though gold futures rose 0.6% to $4,571.40. Losses in gold were partially mitigated by expectations of lower interest rates, despite concerns regarding rising oil prices and Federal Reserve officials remaining open to further rate hikes.
Simultaneously, a global sell-off is impacting semiconductor stocks. In South Korea, the Kospi index dropped by more than 6%, with major companies Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix falling by over 7%. This follows a 5% decline in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. Investors are increasingly wary of rising borrowing costs for technology giants and hyperscalers investing heavily in AI infrastructure, as high government spending and debt supply push bond yields toward multi-year highs.
