Global markets fluctuate amid chip sector selloff and geopolitical tensions

Global financial markets experienced significant volatility as technology and semiconductor stocks faced a widespread selloff. This decline was largely driven by reports that the Chinese memory chip manufacturer CXMT has made progress in developing a new DRAM architecture, raising concerns about increased competition for major players like Micron Technology, Samsung, and SK Hynix.

In the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.38% to 51,850.55, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both declined. The semiconductor sector was particularly hard hit, with Micron Technology seeing a decline of approximately 4%.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine conflict also influenced market movements. While a proposed energy infrastructure truce between Russia and Ukraine was announced, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the agreement had already been violated. These developments, alongside Houthi attacks in the Middle East, contributed to fluctuations in oil prices, with Brent crude trading near $106 per barrel.

In the healthcare sector, Johnson & Johnson reported third-quarter results that met revenue expectations and included an increased full-year 2026 earnings outlook, driven by strong demand for cancer and autoimmune disease medications, despite slower growth in its MedTech division.
