Japan stock market falls as semiconductor and AI stocks decline

The Nikkei 225 index experienced a significant decline on October 13, 2026, dropping by 1,738.53 yen to close at 67,292.39 yen. The downturn was primarily driven by selling pressure in the AI and semiconductor sectors, following weakness in U.S. chip stocks and news that China’s CXMT has begun producing next-generation memory chips.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine also weighed on investor sentiment, though the impact was partially offset by gains in the shipping and energy sectors. Individual semiconductor-related stocks, including Kioxia Holdings and Japan Micronics, saw notable losses.

In the currency markets, the Japanese yen remains sensitive to energy prices and Bank of Japan policy expectations. While wholesale inflation in Japan rose 6.8% year-on-year in September—missing forecasts but remaining elevated—the weak yen continues to drive up import costs, sustaining the case for potential interest rate hikes by the central bank.
