United States faces major measles resurgence with rising deaths

The United States is experiencing a significant measles resurgence, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reporting 4,588 confirmed cases as of October 22, 2026. This figure represents a substantial increase compared to the 2,289 cases reported throughout 2025. The federal death toll for the year has reached three, though state-level reporting shows higher figures in specific regions.

Pennsylvania has been particularly hard-hit, recording 1,317 cases across 43 counties and 251 hospitalizations. State health officials have confirmed five measles-associated deaths, with a sixth case under investigation. The Pennsylvania Department of Health has issued clinical guidance for pregnant patients and newborns due to the risks of infection during pregnancy.

Nationwide, approximately 96% of confirmed cases are outbreak-associated, and the majority of infections occur in individuals who are unvaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state disaster emergency to manage rising cases. Health experts attribute the surge to declining vaccination rates and increasing vaccine skepticism.
