Global meat markets see shifts in pork exports and consumer demand

U.S. pork exports saw a decline in July, falling 6% year-over-year to 224,305 metric tons, with a corresponding 6% drop in value to $641.8 million. This downturn was partially attributed to restrictions related to Pseudorabies Virus (PRV) detection, though these restrictions were lifted in late July. While shipments to Japan, Central America, Colombia, and Canada increased, these gains were offset by decreases in exports to Mexico, China, South Korea, Oceania, and the ASEAN region. Despite the July dip, year-to-date exports remain 2% higher than the previous year.

In Argentina, shifting meat prices are significantly influencing consumer purchasing decisions. High beef prices have positioned pork as a more accessible alternative for households. Data indicates that in August, the price of beef cuts saw a slight monthly decrease but maintained a 51.8% year-over-year increase. In contrast, pork remains considerably cheaper; for example, the price ratio between beef ribs (asado) and pork ribs (pechito de cerdo) allows consumers to purchase nearly two kilos of pork for the price of one kilo of beef.
