Global mental health awareness emphasizes lived experiences and systemic support

As World Mental Health Day approaches, global discussions are shifting toward a public health lens that prioritizes emotional, psychological, and social well-being over mere clinical diagnoses. The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the theme for 2026 as ‘Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change,’ advocating for individuals with mental health conditions to participate meaningfully in shaping the policies and services that affect them.

Challenges remain significant across different regions. In Nepal, mental health is increasingly viewed through the impact of environmental factors such as home, school, and workplace stability. The WHO estimates that one in seven adolescents aged 10–19 experiences a mental disorder, with depression and anxiety being leading causes of disability.

In India, the focus is on the necessity of active listening and creating supportive environments. Experts argue that awareness must translate into practical systems where families, schools, and workplaces can respond to distress before it reaches a crisis point, ensuring that those who reach out are met with support rather than judgment.
