Global Mercy hospital ship begins 10-month medical mission in Ghana

The Global Mercy, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, has docked at the Port of Tema to begin a 10-month medical mission in Ghana. This marks the fifth field service by the charity Mercy Ships in the country.

During the mission, medical teams aim to perform between 1,950 and 2,600 free surgeries and provide between 1,610 and 2,145 dental treatments. Beyond direct clinical care, the initiative focuses on strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure by offering mentoring, education, and clinical placements to an estimated 100 to 250 local healthcare professionals.

Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, stated that the mission is part of a partnership spanning over three decades and aligns with the National Surgical, Obstetric and Anaesthesia Plan launched in 2024. He emphasized that the collaboration is intended to support national priorities rather than serving as a standalone intervention. The mission also utilizes the HOPE Center to provide pre- and post-operative support for patients.
