Global militaries advance AI-driven counter-drone defenses

Global military forces are accelerating the development of counter-drone technologies to address the rising threat of unmanned aerial systems. This shift is driven by the economic challenge of using expensive conventional missiles to intercept relatively inexpensive drones, a problem highlighted by recent conflicts.

China is focusing on artificial intelligence-powered defenses designed to detect and confront large, coordinated drone swarms. By integrating AI with surveillance, sensors, and electronic warfare, these systems aim to analyze simultaneous data from multiple sensors to classify threats and automate defensive responses. China’s large commercial drone and robotics manufacturing base provides a significant industrial advantage in this pursuit.

Similarly, the U.S. Army is working to strengthen its counter-drone capabilities as part of a broader military modernization. This involves integrating advanced sensors, machine vision, robotics, and network-centric technologies to detect, track, and mitigate hostile unmanned threats across land, air, maritime, and underwater domains.
