Global military flashpoints raise concerns of wider conflict

A rising number of global armed conflicts and military flashpoints involving nuclear-armed nations has increased concerns regarding a wider international confrontation. According to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), the current number of armed conflicts worldwide has reached its highest level since the end of World War II.

United Nations Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo has warned that Russia’s war against Ukraine has entered a “dangerous new phase” with a growing threat of regional spillover. Simultaneously, the Middle East faces ongoing U.S.-Iran tensions and fighting in Yemen, while potential flashpoints remain in the Taiwan Strait and between India and Pakistan.

Experts have expressed concern that separate regional conflicts could eventually link together, similar to the period preceding World War II. Some analysts suggest the current environment is extremely dangerous because leaders may underestimate the potential for disaster or view diplomatic compromise as appeasement rather than a tool for stability.
