Global mobile internet connectivity reaches 4.8 billion users

Global mobile internet usage reached approximately 4.8 billion people in 2025, representing 59% of the world's population, according to the GSMA 'The State of Mobile Internet Connectivity 2026' report. While connectivity is expanding, the rate of growth has slowed compared to previous years.

Mobile internet now accounts for 84% of all broadband connections worldwide. In many low- and middle-income countries, mobile devices serve as the primary or sole means of internet access. However, significant digital divides remain. Approximately 3.4 billion people still lack mobile internet access, and 270 million people live in areas without mobile broadband coverage.

Data also highlights a growing reliance on smartphones for daily life, managing essential functions such as payments, travel, and communication. While smartphone users grew by roughly 200 million in the last year, the increase is lower than the 250 million growth recorded in 2024. Additionally, about 650 million people—8% of the global population—rely exclusively on shared or borrowed devices to access the internet.
