Global mortality forecasts show rising deaths from heat and hypersensitivity pneumonitis

A University of Chicago research group, through the Climate Impact Lab, forecasts significant increases in heat-related mortality. Between September 2026 and February 2027, an estimated 239,000 additional deaths are projected worldwide. The Sahel region is expected to see 66,800 excess deaths, with Nigeria accounting for nearly half of that figure at 31,400 projected deaths. Other significant regional impacts include 17,500 deaths in Sudan, 10,000 in Niger, and 8,000 in Chad.

Separately, a study published in Scientific Reports analyzing data from 1999 to 2019 found that hypersensitivity pneumonitis deaths in 32 countries showed an average annual increase in the standardized mortality rate of 5.43%. The research, which utilized WHO mortality data, noted that while rates were stable between 1999 and 2004, they have seen an estimated average annual growth of 7.34% since 2004. The study clarifies that these figures represent changes in recorded deaths and may be influenced by improvements in disease recognition or medical coding.
