Global museum landscape expands with new major openings

Several major cultural institutions are set to open or have recently opened, marking significant developments in global museum architecture and heritage.

In China, the Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art (Suzhou MoCA) has opened on the shores of Jinji Lake. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the 60,000-square-meter complex consists of 12 pavilions connected by a continuous roof inspired by traditional Chinese gardens and the 'lang' corridor. The design aims to integrate the urban environment with the natural landscape.

In the United Arab Emirates, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is scheduled to open on December 11, 2026, in the Saadiyat Cultural District. Designed by the late Frank Gehry, the museum will feature 11,600 square meters of interior space and 23,000 square meters of outdoor exhibition areas, covering various media including sculpture, photography, and new media.

Denmark is preparing for the opening of its new Natural History Museum in Copenhagen in March. Designed by Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects, the project merges historic botanical garden buildings with new underground galleries. The museum will host eight major exhibitions focusing on themes such as the Universe, Earth, Life, and Biodiversity to strengthen the connection between people and nature.
