Global Music Industry Launches AI Labelling Initiative

Leading music industry organisations, including the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Digital Media Association (DIMA), have introduced a voluntary labelling programme for songs created with generative artificial intelligence. The system distinguishes between “AI‑generated” tracks, where AI creates most or all of the composition and vocals, and “AI‑assisted” tracks, which retain human performance but incorporate AI‑produced elements.

The move follows data showing that more than one‑third of new releases on Apple Music are fully AI‑generated and that Deezer reports AI‑generated content in roughly 44 % of its uploads. Existing verification tools on platforms such as Spotify and Deezer will adopt the new labels to give listeners clear information about AI involvement in the music they stream.

IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA Chairman Mitch Glazier said the labels aim to preserve authenticity and trust for fans worldwide, while acknowledging the creative possibilities of AI.
