Global Ocean Surface Temperatures Set 50‑Day Record

For more than 50 consecutive days the average temperature of the planet's sea surface has remained at record highs, with a global mean of about 21 °C across non‑polar oceans. This unprecedented streak, the longest observed in modern records, reflects an exceptional accumulation of heat in the climate system, driven primarily by ongoing global warming and amplified by El Niño episodes.

The oceans, which cover roughly 71 % of Earth’s surface and absorb over 90 % of excess atmospheric heat, play a crucial role in regulating weather. Sustained high sea‑surface temperatures intensify evaporation, influence cloud formation, and can boost the strength of tropical cyclones and other storms. Scientists warn that the persistence of such warmth signals a climate operating on a substantially hotter baseline than a few decades ago, with growing implications for ecosystems and human activities worldwide.
