Global energy markets face supply disruptions and LNG shortages
The global energy market is facing significant instability due to supply disruptions in the Middle East. While oil exports from Gulf nations, excluding Iran, rose to approximately 19.2 million barrels per day in September—representing over 81% of pre-war levels—the market remains volatile due to geopolitical tensions and refining shortages.
To mitigate price spikes, the G7 has agreed to release approximately 100 million barrels of crude oil and diesel from strategic reserves. Despite this, the International Energy Agency describes the current situation as the largest supply disruption in the history of the global oil market. The Vitol CEO noted that the ongoing removal of 10 to 14 million barrels per day from the region is a key factor preventing prices from reaching $200 per barrel.
The liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector is also under pressure. A shortage has resulted in a deficit of approximately 39 million tons, equivalent to 9% of global LNG supplies last year. This is compounded by decreased exports from Qatar and the UAE, which saw a reduction of 35 billion cubic meters between March and June compared to the previous year.
