Saudi Arabia works to restore East-West pipeline amid oil market volatility

Global oil markets are experiencing significant volatility driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Following drone and missile attacks by Houthi forces targeting Saudi Arabian infrastructure, including the East-West pipeline, supply concerns have surged. Saudi Arabia is currently working to restore approximately half of the East-West pipeline capacity, with hopes to return the system to full capacity within six weeks.

Crude oil prices have shown divergent trends. While Brent crude recently fluctuated around the 103-104 USD per barrel range, WTI crude saw a sharp decline below the 100 USD threshold, hitting lows near 95.99 USD before rebounding in some sessions. Market analysts note that while technical corrections are occurring, the risk premium remains high due to potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing US-Iran tensions.

Economists from the New Economics Foundation warn that these oil shocks can rapidly transmit to broader economic sectors, including energy, transport, and food prices. Additionally, the disruption of Saudi exports has forced European refineries, such as Poland's Orlen, to seek alternative supplies from Norway and the UK, as Saudi Aramco has indicated it may withhold certain deliveries to Europe in October.
