Global online scam industry expands through AI and sophisticated networks
The global landscape of online fraud is evolving rapidly, with criminal networks utilizing artificial intelligence and underground marketplaces to scale operations. According to the Global Anti-Scam Alliance, victims in 42 countries lost approximately $442 billion (around €380 billion) last year, a figure that exceeds some estimates of the global cocaine trade.
A recent police raid in Nairobi, Kenya, uncovered a sophisticated investment scam targeting victims in China, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. The operation, conducted from a high-rise apartment, involved suspects from China, Cambodia, and Madagascar who allegedly used Kenyan banks to launder millions of dollars. Investigators found various electronic devices and numerous Chinese and Malaysian passports at the scene.
Experts note that cybercrime has become cheaper and more accessible due to an underground market where criminals can purchase stolen personal data, fake profiles, deepfake technology, and money laundering services. This professionalization makes it increasingly difficult for authorities to keep pace with new fraudulent methods.
