Global organizations warn of regression in women's rights

Global organizations are warning of a significant regression in the rights and equality of women and girls. Plan International reports that over one billion women and girls live in countries where gender equality has stagnated or declined over the last 15 years. At current rates, the organization estimates it will take 171 years to achieve global gender equality.

While some progress has been noted, such as reductions in child mortality and adolescent birth rates, critical challenges remain. These include 133 million girls being out of school, high rates of female genital mutilation, and increased violence against children in conflict zones, where women and girls constitute 90% of victims.

In Latin America, the WomenPower2030 initiative, led by the Fundación para Estudio e Investigación de la Mujer (FEIM) and supported by the European Union, is working to counter these trends. The project operates in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru, focusing on empowering young feminist leaders to influence public policy regarding climate change, sustainable development, and access to justice.
