Smartphone and PC markets face sharp Q3 2026 declines

The global smartphone and personal computer markets experienced significant contractions in the third quarter of 2026. Smartphone shipments fell by 20% year-over-year, marking the lowest third-quarter volume since 2012. This decline is primarily attributed to rising costs for DRAM and NAND memory components, driven by high demand from AI data centers, which has forced manufacturers to prioritize profitability over shipment volume.

In the smartphone sector, Samsung maintained its leadership with a 23% market share despite a 3% decline in shipments. Apple achieved a record third-quarter market share of 22%, up from 18% the previous year, although its total shipments also decreased. Chinese manufacturers including Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo saw notable declines in market share and shipments.

Simultaneously, the PC market saw shipments drop between 20% and 22.4% according to various research firms. Gartner reported shipments fell to 55.4 million units, while IDC noted a 20.1% decline. HP experienced the steepest drop among major vendors, with shipments falling approximately 31%. Lenovo remains the market leader, though it also faced significant shipment reductions. Rising component costs and a shift in corporate spending toward AI-capable workstations have contributed to the downturn in standard PC sales.
