Global pension funds see record balances and shifting investment strategies

Pension fund performance and management trends show varied results across different regions. In the Dominican Republic, AFP Crecer reported that its managed assets exceeded RD$300,000 million in 2025. The company added 46,000 new contributors and currently holds a 26% market share.

In the United States, Fidelity reports that 401(k) plan balances reached a record average of $155,800 in the second quarter of 2026, a 13% increase year-over-year. Individual retirement accounts (IRAs) also hit a record average of $144,523. However, there is a simultaneous increase in workers withdrawing funds from these accounts for liquidity.

In Mexico, data from Consar indicates that retirement fund managers (Afores) significantly increased their international equity investments during July, reaching 1.228 trillion pesos. While government instruments remain the leading allocation at 51.25%, international equity now represents 13.70% of total portfolios, surpassing domestic equity holdings.
