Global PMI data shows mixed economic momentum in September

Global economic data for September shows a mixed landscape of expansion and slowing momentum across major regions.

In the Eurozone, business activity accelerated to its highest level in nearly three and a half years, with the composite PMI rising to 53.1. This growth was widespread, with services and manufacturing both expanding in key economies like Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Ireland. However, this expansion is accompanied by rising inflationary pressures in both input and output costs.

In the United States, the services sector continued to expand but at a slower pace, with the ISM Services PMI falling to 54.9 from 55.4 in August. Despite the slowdown, input price inflation reached its highest level since July 2022, driven by supply chain pressures and energy costs.

Australia reported a slowdown in private-sector growth, with the composite PMI easing to 51.3 and the services PMI falling to 51.9. While the services sector remains in expansion territory, manufacturing activity deteriorated, with the manufacturing PMI dropping to 49.6.

Japan experienced a slowdown in its services sector, with the PMI easing to 51.3 from 52.5 in August, while the composite PMI fell to 52.3.

Global manufacturing activity showed strength, with the J.P. Morgan Global Manufacturing PMI rising to 53.0, marking its highest level since early 2022, supported by increased demand for AI infrastructure and defense equipment.
