Global ports implement workforce training and green energy systems

Port authorities in Argentina and Spain are implementing distinct strategies to address technological and environmental shifts in the maritime sector.

Mónica Litza, president of the Dock Sud Port Management Consortium in Argentina, emphasized the need for workforce adaptation in response to artificial intelligence, automation, and digitalization. To manage this transition, the port has launched 'Dock Sud Global' to assist local SMEs with internationalization and 'Aula Puerto' to coordinate technical training with universities and the productive sector.

In Spain, the Port Authority of the Bay of Cádiz has introduced an Onshore Power Supply (OPS) system for cruise ships. Presented at the Seatrade Cruise Med fair, the system allows vessels to connect to the electrical grid while docked, reducing reliance on auxiliary engines. This infrastructure, supported by an investment from Endesa and NextGenerationEU funds, aims to significantly lower emissions, including a potential 96% reduction in NOx and a 64% reduction in CO2.
