Global powers accelerate AI and autonomous drone warfare development

Major military powers are accelerating the development of autonomous weapon systems and artificial intelligence to reshape modern combat. In the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, both nations are reportedly moving toward the deployment of AI-enabled platforms. This includes autonomous drones capable of identifying and engaging targets with minimal human intervention, as well as integrated “chains of destruction” where networked AI systems coordinate reconnaissance, strikes, and logistics.

Simultaneously, China is advancing multidomain drone swarms designed to integrate autonomous land, sea, and air platforms. Research from the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) indicates that these swarms can autonomously reconfigure, avoid collisions, and maintain missions even under heavy electromagnetic interference. The goal is to create distributed combat networks that use algorithmic task allocation to function as force multipliers, though challenges remain in real-time tactical decision-making and cross-domain coordination.
