Global health warnings issued over impact of screen time on children
Global health authorities and researchers are raising alarms regarding the impact of excessive screen time on child development. The US Department of Health and Human Services has warned of cognitive risks, a phenomenon sometimes referred to as ‘digital dementia.’ Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy noted that the potential risks to mental health often outweigh the benefits of digital device use.
Scientific studies provide specific biological evidence for these concerns. Research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) indicates that children spending more than seven hours daily on screens may experience premature thinning of the cerebral cortex. Furthermore, a massive umbrella review involving 2.8 million children across 64 nations, led by the University of Calgary, found that heavy screen use is linked to poorer academic performance, impaired language skills, and increased psychological difficulties such as anxiety and depression.
In response, various regions are implementing restrictive policies. In Austria, Education Minister Christoph Wiederkehr has banned smartphones in the first eight school grades, labeling them ‘concentration killers.’ Meanwhile, schools in Germany have already established strict internal regulations regarding mobile device usage to promote focus and social interaction.
