Global rail infrastructure projects advance in UK and Malaysia
Network Rail has awarded Kier a £115m ($152m) contract to upgrade the Manchester Airport railway station in the UK. The project involves extending platforms one, two, and three to accommodate longer trains, modernizing signaling systems, and improving the track layout. The core construction phase is expected to take place between late 2026 and mid-2028 to increase capacity and reliability for passengers.
In Malaysia, phase one of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) is 98.16% complete. There are indications that commercial operations could begin as early as mid-December, ahead of the original January schedule. Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) is working to expedite preparations, with fare structures and service schedules pending cabinet approval. Preliminary testing suggests travel times between Gombak and Kota Baru could be as short as four hours.
